This antibody recognises the MUC2 mucin, and shows no cross-reactivity with MUC1, MUC3 or MUC4 mucins. In tissue sections SM1709 recognises colon, liver and prostate tissues strongly. The antibody recognises malignant colonic mucosa as well as normal mucosa.

MUC2 expression is detected in such human tissues as normal colon, breast, prostate, salivary gland and in gastrointestinal, colonic, breast and prostate neoplasia. This antibody labels MUC2 in normal colon and colonic carcinomas where it produces intense perinuclear staining in goblet cells. It also reacts with normal and neoplastic breast tissues and with prostate adenocarcinoma.Synonyms: Intestinal mucin-2, MUC-2, MUC2, SMUC
