Background: MTP18 (Mitochondrial protein 18 kDa) is a downstream target of the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase signaling pathway and is essential for cell viability. It may have a role in maintaining the integrity of the mitochondrial network. Loss of function induces the release of cytochrome c, which activates the caspase cascade and leads to apoptosis.
