Creatine kinase (CK) BB is a cytoplasmic enzyme involved in energy homeostasis. The protein reversibly catalyzes the transfer of phosphate between ATP and various phosphogens such as creatine phosphate. Creatine kinase consists of two subunits, which can be either B (brain type) or M (muscle type). Therefore, three different cytosolic isoenzymes exist: CK-MM, CK-BB and CK-MB. Cytosolic CK isoenzymes are always co-expressed in a tissue specific fashion together with a mitochondrial isoform. MM is the major form in skeletal muscle and myocardium, MB exists in myocardium and BB in many tissues, especially brain.Synonyms: B-CK, CKB, Creatine kinase B chain, Creatine kinase B-type, Creatine kinase BB
