POU3F3, also known as Brn1, is a member of the POU family of transcription factors that is predominantly expressed in the brain. It contains a characteristic POU domain and a homeobox DNA-binding domain. POU3F3 plays a role in the development of the brain and kidney by upregulating transcription of key genes in these tissues. For example, POU3F3 interacts with the proneural protein Mash1 and POU3F2 (Brn2) on the promoter of the Notch ligand Delta1 to activate Delta1 transcription, a key step in neurogenesis.Synonyms: BRN1, Brain-1, Brain-specific homeobox/POU domain protein 1, Brn-1, OTF-8, OTF8, Oct-8, Octamer-binding protein 8, Octamer-binding transcription factor 8, POU domain class 3 transcription factor 3
