- Background: Monocarboxylate transporter 8 (MCT8) is a very active and specific thyroid hormone transporter. It stimulates cellular uptake of thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), reverse triiodothyronine (rT3) and diidothyronine. It does not transport Leu, Phe, Trp or Tyr (By similarity) [taken from the Universal Protein Resource (UniProt) P36021].
